Spring/Summer/Barns
From lakes and streams, to farms and parks, Minnesota's spring and summers offer a great variety of material for the landscape artist. I usually don't need to go very far from my backyard to find fabulous but often subtle beauty that takes my breath away. And that's when I know I have to paint!
Autumn
Autumn is more of a challenge for representational artists than one would think. Getting the shadows to read as shadows on a golden tree, for instance, can be difficult. You want the shadows to be cool, but the inherent local color is hot. And, of course, the window of opportunity for painting Autumn's vivid colors is small due to the generally short-lived season.
Winter
Winter is perhaps my favorite season for discovering Mother Nature's beauty. From foggy and frosty to sunny and brilliant, Winter's palette is ever changing. I love the subtle blues and lavenders and pinks and golds that are often reflected in the snow from a beautiful winter sky.
Urban
One of the benefits of being a painter is seeing beauty in things often ignored by most ... like gritty, hard-edged cityscapes. I love how the geometric, hard-edged lines of buildings combine with the curvilinear organic forms of nature.
